- Vitamin C and the Risk of Developing Kidney Stones
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: My doctor told me that I could run the risk of kidney stones if I
- continue to take my daily dose of Vitamin C. I believe that C is very good
- for you, as preached by Dr. Linas Pauling who won a Nobel prize. Perhaps you
- might write something in your column that I could use to show my doctor the
- errors of his ways. I am sure you will have the latest research on this
- question as you seem to on many other subjects.
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: While many admire Linus Pauling for his work on chemical bonding
- which won the Nobel Award, his theory on the use of megadoses of vitamins,
- particularly Vitamin C, is not as widely esteemed. Some individuals who take
- as much as 15-25 grams per day of Vitamin C may well be putting themselves in
- danger of developing kidney stones.
- There is no dispute about the use of Vitamin C in combatting a vitamin
- deficiency disease called scurvy. But excess C in the body is converted to a
- substance called "oxalate" and in some people, oxalate can join with calcium
- to form crystals of calcium oxalate that are the building blocks of kidney
- stones. Oxalate is also found in nuts, chocolate, green leafy vegetables, and
- tea, so that the amount resulting from the metabolism of Vitamin C can add to
- the possibility of stone formation in susceptible people. I don't know how
- much you are taking, but the dangers increase as the quantity of Vitamin C
- over 80 mg goes higher. I am sorry, I doubt your doctor will change his mind
- after reading this, but maybe you will.
